Ollanege consists of six new paintings by Michael Andrew Page that sit at the intersection of representation and contemplative abstraction. Using the architectural structure of the bivvy, a basic tent or temporary shelter, as the starting point, each work begins with a process of preparing drawings and sketches. These are then transcribed to CAD and rendered. The resulting models are multiplied and manipulated to produce an image that is both recognisable from its origins, as a shielding congregational structure, but also transformed to a jewel-like abstraction, reminiscent of a stained glass window.
The basic image is transcribed onto the canvas via a photographic printing process called cyanotype. Paintings are built up with layers of oil mixed with refined poppy oil and resins that provide a transparency to the works, honouring both the light-perforated quality of the bivvy and the resultant paintings aesthetic similarity stained glass.
